What is an Anchor Text Link
An Anchor Text Link is a website url “anchored to” a phrase (or a word)
those “words” are what we in the SEO industry call a “keyword phrase”
Why are they important?
THE most common SEO mistake made by everyone, including so called “marketing professionals” and “social media marketing folks, even web designers and web developers (who should know better) is this: the assumption that the website url to list is the http:// yada yada…
what’s wrong with that?
no one knows who you are yet… matter of fact the folks you’re spending your hard earned marketing$ on, don’t CARE who you are… no one is searching for YOU
they’re searching for what they want… and how do they do that?
they type in keywords… keyword phrases.
So how do you create an anchor text link?
html code, you hand code the sentence, this is very likely the ONLY HTML coding you’re ever likely to need to know… it’s really simple, there is a “syntax” to use
all HTML uses an open tag and a closing tag, those “tags” are instructions to the web browser to “render” the web page being “parsed”
All “tags” have brackets (those are the greater than sign < and are followed by the less than sign >
a close tag looks like this: </a>
An open tag looks like this:
<a href=”yada yada dot com”>
before you freak out… just copy this “syntax” to a notepad, use it as a “cheat sheet”
<a href=”http://yourwebsite.com”>your chosen keyword phrase</a>
remember to use quotation marks between the website url
So.. for MY site, this one, the phrase I want folks to find me in Google for is this:
Local SEO for Maryland
therefore, I’d use this anchor text link:
<a href=”http://www.frederickwebpromotions.com/”>Local SEO for Maryland</a>
and that little HTML sentence would “render” this:

it IS possible to “over do” the anchor text thing… you do want to spread it out, no more than 50% of your links anchor text linked, of that 50% do NOT make all of them point to your TLD (yourdomain dot com) make some of them point to interior pages or interior blog posts (individual blog posts), other 50% spread em out, make some urls point to your manta.com, and your hotfrog.com and your blogspot.com and your wordpress.com etc
