Facebook may not be specially designed for business marketing, but you would be crazy not to take advantage of what it can do for your advertising and sales.  Following is a list of some useful tips to consider when “Facebooking for business”:

1.  Create a fan page or an “official” fan page rather than a profile.

2.  Don’t use a Facebook Group.  They are outdated and a waste of time.

3.  Once you pick a title you can’t change it, so choose wisely.  In most cases you’ll want to use your actual business name so consumers can easily find you.

4.  As soon as you reach 25 fans, set up your username.  This makes finding you easier still.

5.  Learn the Facebook Markup Language (FBML) and use this tool to create an eye-catching, outstanding page.

6.  Offer deals or coupon codes to motivate users to become fans.

7.  Consider using the Wildfire App platform to offer deals.

8.  Engage your community and encourage feedback every day by posting questions, insights, and news on your wall.

9.  Watch for your “Weekly Facebook Page Update” email for fun statistics reflecting the effectiveness of your page.

10.  Increase NFO (News Feed Optimization) by learning the basics of Facebook’s ranking algorithm, EdgeRank.  Basically, the algorithm likes you if you are more actively engaged with more fans.

11.  Submit photos and encourage users to do the same.

12.  Encourage interaction by posting fun polls and consumer reviews for users to fill out.

13.  Add tabs to highlight your social networking elsewhere on the web.  If you’re on Twitter also, why not let your Facebook fans know?

14.  Be aware that customer service issues will arise; be prepared to handle them with tact and grace.  Whenever you open the door for consumer interaction, you open the door for potential “issues”.

15.  Think in terms of earning the trust and respect of your fans; don’t risk alienating friends with overzealous marketing.  You want to keep friends and earn long-term customers who keep coming back to your page.
