I’m often asked why it costs so much for a webmaster to pay an SEO professional to improve a company website’s rank in Google. The often steep fees charged by competent SEO consultants can price some small businesses out of the market. The ROI or return on investment from increased sales or leads from a top ranked spot in Google can double a businesses gross sales.
Why is it a company has no problem paying $30,000 for a pick up truck that earns no income but balk at paying $5,000 or $10,000 for a top ranking in local Google search results?
SEO or search engine optimization is the art of improving an existing website’s performance in Google search results. The “optimize” part is a bit of a misnomer, the etiology of the phrase dates back to the infancy of search engines and Google’s revolutionary algorithm’s impact on search.
There is a story of a newspaper publisher who’s printing press broke down an hour before the next days printing deadline. The newspaper printing manager called in a printing press mechanic in a desperate attempt to get the following day’s edition out the door. The printing press mechanic showed up with minutes to spare, took a hammer and tapped a nut repairing the press. He handed the newspaper a bill for $1005.00.
The manager was happy but asked about the odd figure, “why the $5.00?” he asked. The mechanic (consultant) replied:
$5.00 to fix the press, $1,000.00 for knowing where to tap
Early on it was noticed that there were things one could do to ones website that Google seemed to like. It was observed that you could alter, edit, tweak or Optimize a website resulting in higher rankings in the search results. The general public operates under the assumption that Google “vouches” for or somehow has a public trust like responsibility to ensure what ever websites are listed (or ranked) #1 means Google has given it’s tacit approval of, sort of a “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval”. People Trust Google, People tell things to Google that they’d not tell their wives, girlfriends, best friends, even their doctor!
What are you currently paying for that quarter page ad in the Yellow Pages? Chances are it’s $500 to $1000 a month. Most companies have a company vehicle, a truck perhaps. A 3/4 ton pick up costs at least $20,000.00, a one ton diesel can easily cost a company over $30,000.oo Does that truck make you money? I mean I know it’s a business expense but does it generate sales or just facilitate work getting done?
For one thing when I take a home remodeling company, I can not take a carpenter, nor a painter.
I can take a podiatrist in Montgomery County Maryland or Montgomery County Ohio, but all other podiatrists are off the table for me. It’s a conflict of interest issue. A lawyer can not represent the defense and the prosecution.
Here at Frederick Web Promotions we charge $2500.oo to get a company website to rank more than once in the top 10 for regional Google ranking. It’s about 100 man hours @ $25.00 an hour. A phone book advertisement can cost that much and produce less ROI. We charge $3500.00 for statewide Google ranking and $12,000.00 for Nationwide Google ranking
Fee for getting your Google Local Business Listing (or Googlemaps) listing in the 7 pack is $1500.00
We have doctors and lawyers who can easily afford this fee, smaller businesses often must make payment arrangements beginning with a $1,000.00 down payment.
