Off Page SEO
Maryland General Contractor client as a keyword strategy guinea pig.
Our team conducted an empirical test of Off Page Optimization.
Actually the phrase “optimization” means less in 2009 than it did in 2003. Originally the concept of being able to tweak a webpage to “get Google to like it more” was unofficially termed “optimization”. Google generally does not reveal the exact method it uses to determine who is ranked #1, and who comes in below that coveted rank. The SEO community keeps track of the Google Algorithm’s “observable behavior” and reports back just like the scientific community shares certain information.
In the years since the term search engine “Optimization” was coined, it’s become increasingly clear that what makes the most difference in ranking is NOT on your website but to create “extra websites” that link TO your website.
We improved the rank of a client’s Google listing by the addition of one single blogspot blog post and one single wordpress.com blog post. Frederick Web Promotions has a remodeling contractor SEO client (BT Martin Contractors) who performs most of their work in Maryland. At first we decided to target the keyword phrase “Maryland Home Remodeling” and sought to rank them in Google for that keyword phrase. After securing a listing in the top 10 serps, we did some market research and decided to improve ranking for the keyword phrase
“Maryland General Contractor“.
At the time of that strategic decision http://www.btmartincontractors.com ranked 271 in Google for the phrase Maryland General Contractor.
We did ZERO to optimize the main website (The company name and domain name had the keyword “contractor” in it already).
What we did do was to test OFF SITE Optimization, we made a single blogspot.com blog and a single wordpress.com blog that linked to the main site. I coined the term “supporting blogs” and “second tier blogs” to describe the ranking tactic.
Conclusion of the test?
BT Martin Contractors ranking for the keyword phrase “maryland general contractor” improved by 100: From ranking #271 in Google to #171 solely from the addition of a single blog post on a single blogspot.com blog and a single blog post on a single wordpress.com blog
The purpose of the “extra blogs” was 3 fold:
A) get readers from the blogspot.com community and wordpress.com community to become aware of our main site
B) Create backlinks from the “supporting blogs” to help improve the Google ranking of our main site
C) Occupy more “serp real estate” for our client (resulting in less available “serp real estate” for their competitors)

So, you can get a term that has 46 global monthly search to position to 171 by this method, you reckon. Why bother? Still it is a better keyword choice than Maryland Home Remodeling – that gets 24.
Interesting experiment. These one way links from trusted blogs do boost one’s rankings
Look again, my client is now on the front page, top ten for “maryland general contractors”
you’re point was well taken… I’m of the opinion that if you rank for and get (local) Google Trust for a keyword phrase (admittedly a long tail phrase), that “trust” passes on to your other keywords. I can’t prove it but my research bears it out.
