What is meant by Link Popularity, inbound links, incoming links, and/ or back links?

Quality Incoming Links:
I’ll explain:

How does Google decide who gets to be top dog and who is relegated to second fiddle?

Let’s say we have two almost identical websites: Coke and Pepsi
not much to differentiate the two
both have the same traffic
both have the same advertising budget
both bought Cable TV ads
both have similar publicity companies
both have similar advertising agencies on retainer.

Google has to pick

There can only be one #1

the answer is

Link Popularity

Link Popularity: The number of sites which link to a particular site. Many search engines use link popularity as a factor in determining the search engine ranking of a website. Source: Linking 101
What the dickens is that?
the total number of OTHER websites that carry YOUR companies website link.
in other words, if your link (your company website) is more *popular* than the other guys…you win.

The industry term is incoming links or inbound links. (other sites that have YOUR link on them)

Is it really that simple?

well, of course there’s some caveats, the * quality* of the incoming link.

I’ll explain that as well:
for the sake of the above argument, lets say our fictitious Coke and Pepsi sites are equal in every respect… right down to the same volume of incoming links.

So what criteria would Google use then?

let’s say Coke has inbound links from the Frederick News Post online version of the local newspaper.

and let’s say Pepsi has incoming links from the venerable Washington Post dot com.

…doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out which of those two sets of inbound links is more important.

If you were Google which one would you place more value on?

You WANT an inbound link from this superior quality website.
You do if you want to rank high in Google
